Matwiczak, Ph.D. kmat@mail.utexas.edu SOME ASPA AWARDS & PUBLIC SERVICE RECOGNITION WEEK HISTORY - When did all this begin? Public Service Recognition Week has been observed nationally since 1985 (see http://www.theroundtable.org for more), but the history of observances in central Texas is a lot shorter. Since 1995, CenTex Chapter of ASPA has joined in the national observance of Public Service Recognition Week with proclamations, programs and posters in collaboration with many other organizations. In 1995, only a few days after the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma City, CenTex Chapter President Eddie Molina and leaders of several other organizations addressed a luncheon program topic of "How can we improve the public perception of public servants?" The other organizations included the Austin Society for Public Administration, Texas Public Employees Association, Texas Public Employees Union and the Texas State HR Network. All resolved to try celebrating Public Service Recognition Week every year to thank public servants and help the public better understand and appreciate the work public servants do every day. In 1996, CenTex ASPA and the Austin LBJ School Alumni Association co-hosted a luncheon honoring public service with special speaker Elspeth Rostow, former dean of the LBJ School. Also in 1996, in separate ceremonies, Governor George W. Bush, Austin Mayor Bruce Todd, and CenTex Chapter Council member and Georgetown Mayor Leo Wood proclaimed the first week of May "Public Service Recognition Week". In 1997, CenTex Chapter merged with one of its collaborators, the Austin Society for Public Administration. In that year, a tradition began of presenting the Austin Society's prestigious annual awards as a special observance during Public Service Recognition Week. Did you know that the first Austin Society for Public Administration Public Administrator of the Year Award was presented to Everett L. Auschutz, Texas Employees Retirement System administrator in 1968? The first winner of the first "ASPA Development of Public Service Professionals Award" went to Prof. Emmette Redford of the LBJ School in 1980? Did you know that the first James W. McGrew Public Policy Research Award went to Jim Shear, Frank Battle, Michael Campbell, Brian Graham and Joe Wisnoski of the State Comptroller's Office in 1985? Who will win these and additional awards in 2002? Attend the banquet and find out, and help honor some outstanding public servants! ==================================================================== e-Blast! is the occasional email bulletin of CenTex Chapter of ASPA.
